It's our 26th Tote and Gloat this year. I hope you have your ticket - we don't sell them at the door - they need to be pre-bought. The Cloth Shop (Victoria Street) and Village Books & Crafts (College Street) still have a few tickets for sale ($10.00)
Show and Tell in the morning.
Challenge quilts to view and vote for your favourite, and this year we have a new category - Anything Goes - so long as it is quilting related!
The challenge this year is a page from a child's non-fiction book. Those who wanted to enter, had to pick an envelope with the page inside.
Maximum size is 2m square and in the Anything Goes category it can't weigh more than 5kgs.
Our guest speaker is Yvonne Brown from the UK. She has been holidaying in New Zealand since the end of Remarkable Symposium. Yvonne is also taking two classes on the Sunday and Monday after T&G - one is Creative Machine Trapunto and the other is Celtic Cutwork.

The Wheels on the Bus ...

go round and round. Some of the RCQ members on a bus trip to Wellington to see the Pinestream Quilters Exhibition in Upper Hutt and the Wellington Quilter's Guild 20th Anniversary Exhibition Under covers at St Patrick's College, Kilbirnie (finishes tomorrow).

We had a lovely day and the selection of quilts shown was a lovely mix of traditional, contemporary and a few art ones.

Anyone who would like to donate quilts to Red Cross for distribution to people in Christchurch affected by the earthquakes can deliver them to Dianne at 318 College Street, Palmerston North.

Dianne has been in touch with local Red Cross who say they can courier any items down to Christchurch for distribution.

The situation is probably a lot worse than we can imagine – our life goes on, theirs is VERY disrupted. Plus there are the continual after-shocks, which may continue for weeks, and some are as big as earthquakes we all feel and talk about here (5+ magnitudes, not good). Constant earthquakes are very distressing.
Quilts will help to provide comfort where needed.

Please pass this message on to anybody else you know who can help.

Challenge Entries for Celebration 2010

The challenge this year was to be inspired by a greeting card (to be attached), the size was to be A3 (210cm x 420cm) and the be 3 layers, i.e. a quilt.
It is really important that you follow the rules - especially when it comes to size. Some entries were not the correct measurements, and in a big competition these would have been eliminated.
Also, artist's statements - it's really important to put about what INSPIRED you, not how it was made, and keep the words down - sometimes a 'story' needs to be edited, then someone may be offended. Please read what you have written out loud and you will find whether it makes sense or not.

Celebration of Quilts 2010

Celebration starts this Friday (tomorrow). The set-up is continuing at the Convention Centre, Palmerston North. I have been down there and displayed the Challenge Quilts and the Cupcake Challenge. This show goes for 3 days, Friday (27th) until Sunday (29th) from 10:00am - 4:00pm each day. There is a merchant mall, raffles - 2 quilts, fabric and indulgence.
These are the entries to the Calorie-Free Cupcake Challenge. Entrants could make any size, type (so long as it was textiles) and any number. Viewer's vote with money, which will all go to the Children's Ward at the Hospital.

On Saturday, about 20 Club members got together to stitch quilts for the Red Cross. The Red Cross had purloined wool and cotton from their charity shop, here's some of the fabric:

Ladies got together in small groups and cut, ironed, and sewed:

By the end of the day 7 quilt tops (and a couple of backs), and several cushions were finished. All that needs to be done is the quilting and the Red Cross have some quilts that they can raffle off for fund raising.

This Saturday, 1st May, is our 25th Tote & Gloat. It will be held at Arena 3, Pascal St, Palmerston North. The doors open at 8:30am and tickets cost $10.00.
This is the biggest Show and Tell in the region. A great day to interact with other quilters from around the lower North Island, and to listen to our guest speaker, all the way from Chicago, Il., Judy Coates Perez.

Final Meeting for 1009

Monday 23 November at 7:30pm kicks off the final meeting for the year. We will begin with the AGM, which should be all over in 20 minutes, then on to the rest of the evening. Our guest speaker is Michelle Mikkelson from The Christmas Heirloom Company. Michelle will show us how to decorate for Christmas and show off some of her fantastic quilts.
Afterwards we will have a shared supper.

July - Birthday Month Celebration

I've been pretty slow in posting news on this blog for Rose City Quilters - just as well they aren't paying me, eh?
July was the Club's birthday month and the club members were the entertainment. Each selected a roll of thread and later formed a group with others who had the same colour thread. This way everyone gets mixed up - a way of meeting new people! Each group had a bag of bits and pieces and had to create an ensemble of wearable art.
This is the hall where everyone is madly creating (after all there was a time limit!) Prizes were awarded for such things as: every piece supplied used, the best shoes, the best bag, the best ... you name it, there was a prize, so that everyone won.

Quilting That Quilt Top

Have you wondered just how you should quilt that quilt top? I'm sure you have and sometimes it just seems easier to take it to someone else to have the ideas and to do it for you! Monday 23rd February, Rose City Quilters has as their 'guest speaker' several members who will talking about some ideas. One will be a hand quilter, another a long arm quilter and another will be talking about what you can do with your own domestic sewing machine.

Tote and Gloat 2008

Next Saturday 3rd May, the start of the Duck Shooting Season, is a day for the girls (oops! and those men who would rather quilt than shoot ducks!) at our annual Tote and Gloat. This year it will be held at Arena 3 on Pascal Street, Palmerston North, starting at 8:30am until 4:00pm. A day of quilts, show and tell, friends, shopping, competitions and a guest speaker. This year we have invited Sandy Corry from Australia.
Here's some history of Rose City Quilter's Tote and Gloat (by Josie Bliss, Club Historian).
The first Tote and Gloat was held at West End School Hall on 12th April 1986 after Jennie Anderson came up with the idea. The cost was $3.00 and we had 2 merchant stands. At the 2nd Tote and Gloat there was a cushion competition and then in 1989 the first challenge wall hanging competition was introduced - there were 37 entries. For several years now, besides a challenge for club members, there has been a block challenge, which anyone purchasing tickets to Tote & Gloat is able to enter. Instructions are sent with the tickets. A selection of these blocks are chosen by a Viewer's Choice vote and used to make a raffle quilt for the following year. The balance of the entries are put into bundles and lots drawn from those who entered.
Since 1986 Tote & Gloat has been an annual event on Rose City Quilters' calendar with our 22nd Tote & Gloat to be held this year.
This is a ticket only event, but if you happen to be in the area and wish to attend a limited number of tickets are available at the door (you won't be turned away from a fantastic day!). Cost is $10.00 and there is a cafe on-site for purchasing of food and drinks.
Tote and Gloat is a great day out with entertainment, a guest speaker, lucky spot prizes, merchants, challenges and a wonderful Show and Tell provided by quilters from near and far.

March Club Meeting

Our guest speakers this month will be Jennie Anderson and Dianne Southey reporting back on the workshop they attended early in the year, about Judging Quilts.

Karen Eckmeier's Visit

About 230 members turned up on Friday night to hear Karen speak. She gave us a virtual workshop in both her 'Happy Villages' and 'Accidental Landscape' classes. This meant that those who were not in the group of lucky people who got to attend her workshops, were able to see how she made these lovely quilts. Karen was very easy to listen too, gave us great introduction to her 'world' and had a Powerpoint display that took us through her workshops. Quilt Symposium Manawatu had some lucky number draws to win copies of both Karen's books. These were eagerly received by the recipients. Afterwards there was a question and answer time and people were encouraged to come up and look and touch her samples.
Saturday was Karen's 'Happy Villages' workshop, which had 25 attendees.

Karen Eckmeier's Lectures

Karen Eckmeier is lecturing in Palmerston North at the Convention Centre on Friday 22nd February.
Karen arrived in New Zealand on Wednesday 13th February from -15 degree snow and cold to a wonderful warm 25 degree New Zealand day. Her first lecture was on Friday 15th in Whangarei. Here are some of the comments received so far -

Our Last Evening for the Year

We had a lovely social evening for the end of 2007. At our Annual General Meeting we lost 3 committee members but gained 5 - what a blessing to have new members and previous committee members coming back to run the Club. Next year will be a busy year, with Tote and Gloat in May and Celebration of Quilts in August. Two big shows that will need the extra (wo)man power and ideas.
Here is a photo of some of the supper that we partook in - so much food!
We also had a suitcase sale. Not only was there fabric, quilting magazines, laces, 'decorations' that people had made, but crockery and plants. I think that everyone had a successful time.
The library was also well patronised because members could have books out over the Christmas period, so there is a 2 month loan.

Monday 26th November is the last Club meeting for the year. Meeting starts at 7:30pm at the Wesley Church, Broadway Avenue, Palmerston North. All visitors are welcome. Members will be able to collect their newsletter.
We are having a 'suitcase' sale where members bring anything sewing related that they wish to sell. There is no commission and the seller sets the price (it could be open to negotiation).
We are also having an 'Inchies' swap. These are one inch square fabric art works - a very addictive and very easy to make lots.
Members are requested to bring a small plate of supper food to share and non-perishable food for the Foodbank.
Library. Remember to return library books and then choose many more to take out for 2 months until the January meeting.

Material Girls Quilts

Photo of 4 quilts and tops the Material Girls assembled and partly quilted on one weekend from pre-made and homemade squares of ANYTHING from their scrap bags.
We accepted all offerings and then sorted them into groups of vaguely similar colours, e.g. blue, darks and novelty.
It was fun and gave a (surprisingly) good result.
Donated to the RCQ relief quilt stash.

October and November Meetings

Club meeting is on Monday 22nd October even though this is Labour Weekend. Our guest speaker is President's Choice so we will get to hear about a person's quilting journey and see lots of quilts along the way.
Our Block of the Month this month are Neonatal quilts for the Palmerston North Unit. These quilts are to be 18 inches square with polyester batting, or if you wish, just a quilt top. All are greatly received.

A reminder that the November meeting is the last for the year. It is also our Annual General Meeting, plus we will be having a suitcase sale and an 'Inchies' swap. Members are encouraged to consider nomination for a term on Committee as we will be losing one member. There will also be a collection of tinned and dried food for the foodbank as well as a social supper.

Neonatal Quilt Presentation

Biddy, who runs our Block of the Month (BoM), has just been up to Palmerston North hospital and handed over some quilts that were made as a BoM a couple of months ago. The charge nurse, Melissa was rapt with them.

We will need to make more though, they average between 30-40 babies per month! But, as Robin (RCQ committee member and neonatal ward nurse) said, "some are long termers!"

Quilt Housie and QSM

We had a fabulous evening at Club last night. Many of the members had been very busy finishing quilts, so we had lots to admire for Show and Tell. Instead of a guest speaker, we played Quilt Housie. Every player had a sheet with pictures of quilt blocks, which had to be identified when the name was called out. It took quite a while before we had any 'line' winners, but not long afterwards we had a 'Housie' winner - congratulations to Ngaire Chappell who won 6 batik fat quarters.

Quilt Symposium Manawatu Convenor, Dianne Southey, spoke to the Club about QSM's success and how they had been nominated for an award. This award nomination came from Destination Manawatu to honour and recognise the work of all the volunteers who worked so many hours in organising New Zealand's Quilt Symposium 2007, here in the Manawatu. Last Tuesday night, 21 August, at the Palmerston North Convention Centre, in an awards evening run by the Palmerston North city Council, QSM won the Runner-Up Award in the Sports & Leisure section. The award comprises of a framed certificate and a small monetary amount.

Congratulations to all you wonderful women out there who worked so hard, for so long, to give us a fantastic experience at Symposium. And to Dianne Southey for driving the whole thing.

August Club Meeting

The August meeting will be on Monday 28th August, beginning at 7:30pm. This night will be a social evening after our usual business, instead of having a guest speaker. So come along, meet new people have fun, laughter, bring your thinking caps, because we are going to be playing Quilt Housie! Yes, that social evening from way back. If you don't know the names of blocks, coerce, bribe or threaten your neighbour for their help - quilting prizes are up for grabs - and this doesn't cost you any money!!

The club meets on the 4th Monday of every month (even on holidays), except December. This meeting is held at Wesley Broadway Methodist Church on Broadway, opposite Carncot School, Palmerston North. Doors open at 7:00pm.
Newsletters are published bi-monthly and every paid-up member receives one, either as a hard copy or via email.
Visitors are welcome and there is a $3.00 entry fee on signing in.
Raffles are quilting related items. Tickets are 50 cents each and drawn on the night.
We have a 'Show and Tell' where members (and visitors) are encouraged to bring along their works for display.
Tea and coffee are available after the meeting.
The annual subscription ($25.00) allows you to borrow books and magazines from the Library until the next meeting. You may reserve any book. The Library also has scrap material boxes, which any member is invited to take home and use or add to.
Our library is our most precious resource. We have over 600 books and magazines, and new books of interest to all skills and talents of our members, are purchased monthly. The committee has just bought a laptop computer for the librarian to put all the titles into a catalogue. This is going to make it so much easier for stocktake, reserves, issues and searching for titles - yippee!!

Birthday Month

July is our birthday month and last month we celebrated our 25th birthday. This is the cake, made and iced by Deidre Cruickshank (it was really lovely!).

We invited the Life Members to cut the cake, they are (from left to right), Josie Bliss, Jennie Anderson, Kay Booth and Dianne Southey. Our entertainment for the evening was dancing by the Spring Chickens (not the committee) and a magic act. Committee members did get dressed in silver wigs and lots of silver jewellery, though.

A New Blog for the Club

I've been given the go ahead by the committee to set up a Blog for Rose City Quilters! As newsletter editor it will probably be my job to post blogs, but soon (I'm sure) it will be great to have other Club members taking part. Perhaps even they will want to check out other relevant information and receive their newsletters this way. Oh, the links to other great web sites, the photos and so much more!
